BERLIOZ

Opera:LE CORSAIRE
Composer:BERLIOZThe''Le Corsaire Overture''is one of Berlioz's most spirited and characteristic works.Although it sounds immediate and impulsive,it went through several transformations between its original conception in 1844 and final publication in 1852.Berlioz was initially inspired by the coastline around Nice(especially a stone tower
where the lodged at the time, the 'Tour des Ponchettes') and called the work La Tour de Nice.He then revised the overture and gave it a new name,Le Corsaire Rouge(after Fennimore Cooper's 'The bRed Rover'),but then revised it once more as Le Corsaire(suggesting Byron)before it was published. The influence of Byron on all the arts at the time was very popular, and so any work showing a link(however tenuous)was almost ensured success. The overture begins boisterously and is followed by a quieter, more effective section, the tempo then picks up again, and the main impression left by the work is one of tremendous verve and excitement.

MAJESTY AND GRANDEUR
Composer:ALEXANDER BORODIN
Overture:from opera PRINCE IGOR
Alexander Borodin's last opera,''Prince Igor'',is generally thought to be one of the classic epic Russian operas based on a historical subject.First performed in 1890,the operacontains some of the best music that Borodin wrote and has for more than a century enjoyed a permanent place in the international opera repertoire.Borodin was a chemist by profession, and composed his music in his spare time but was not able to complete the score of ''Prince Igor'' before his death. It was completed by two of his friends,Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov, both famous composers in their own right.Borodin never wrote down the overture, but Glazunov heard him play it many times and was able to produce this faithful version. It is composed entirely from material which is heard later in the opera and opens with the music that precedes Igor's great aria in the second act.

Opera:ZAMPA
Composer:FERDINAND HEROLD
In a short carrier'Ferdinand Herold composed many operas and ballets, and achieved at the end of his brief life(he died in 1833 at the age of 42) in' Zampa' one of the most successful of all French'operas comiques'.The 'opera comique'was a work with spoken dialogue which would often have some sort of moral included in its plot. This is true of 'Zampa'(subtitled'The Marble Bride')which has a basic story similar to that of Mozart's'Don Giovanni'in that Zampa,a Sicilian pirate, forces his brother's bride,Camilla,to marry him by threatening to kill her father, who is languishing in his pirate prison. The marble statue of Zampa's former lover,Alice, whom he had previously disdainfully abandoned, takes an active part in the plot of several occasions and finally drags the unfaithful pirate with her into the sea. Constantly being performed in the 19th cencury,Zampa'isnowdays remembered for this atmosphere overture, which uses a larger orchestra than was customary at the time.

MOZART:The Marriage Of Figaro
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was the most famous of all musical child prodigies, but far more remarkable than this precocity was his development into the composer of works of the greatest beauty, depth and humanity.'The Marriage of Figaro'is an adaptation of the important play of the same name by the French playwright Beaumarchais wh
ich explores the tension between the various classes in the lead-up to the French Revolution.Another French author and music critic,Stendahl, called Mozart's opera'a sublime mixture of wit and melancholy which has no equal. The short overture to 'The Marriage of Figaro',which was first produced in 1786,is one of the most light-hearted overtures ever written. The bustling opening represents the intrigues that are about to be played out in the opera, and which take place in the course of just one day.Figaro and Susanna are to be married but their employer,Count Almaviva wants to exercise his right to spend a night with the bride. He is(of course)foiled, and the evening ends with a scene of reconciliation between the assembled company before they all rush off to celebrate the wedding.

Offenbach: Orpheus in the Underworld (Zubin Mehta, New York Philharmonic)
OFFENBACH:Orpheus in the Underworld
First performed in 1858.Offenbach's parody of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice was something of a scandal when it was first performed.Although the work was acclaimed by the public,he was accused by the critics of blaspheming antiquity, the government and current social conditions.'Orpheus in the Underworld'was Offenbach's first full-length theatrical work and is just one of the long series of bitingly satirical operettas all poking fun at contemporary figures and situations. The basic comedy comes from the fact that, contrary to the Greek original,Orpheus is only too pleased to see the back of Eurydice, who is more than happy to inhabit the world of Hades.Orpheus only tries to resque her under pressure froma character called Public Opinion. The piece includes the famous'Can-Can' and also a hilarious send-up of serious opera, represented by a parody of Orpheus'famous lament(Che faro) from Gluck's opera.'Orpheus ran for 228 performances, the last of which was attended by none other than Napoleon III.The operetta was originally performed with a short instrumental prelude, and the overture which is commonly known today is a pot-pourri of tunes from the piece arranged by Carl Binder for the first performances in Vienna.
Jacques Offenbach "La belle Hélène" Overture

Opera:LA BELLE HELENE
Composer:OFFENBACH
Jacques Offenbach was a master of parody and wit,and his operetta 'La Belle Helene'displays all the marks of his genius.Yet,in parodying the antics of the great classical characters in ancient Greece(just as he had done in 'Orpheus in the Underworld'),he was equally able to mock contemporary figures and events.Indeed, through Offembach,Paris was poking fun at itself, especially as Paris is the name of the prince who ultimately abducts Helen.Among the many witty moments in the operetta, are hilarious send-ups of famous operas of the time('William Tell'and'La Muette de Portici') and an outrageous Tyrolean aria for Paris complete with yodelling effects. The sparkling Overture to'La Belle Helene' contains many melodies which appear later in the operetta, most notably the march for the entrance of the kings which is followed by Paris's song, played on the oboe.

REZNICEKE

Overture:DONNA DIANA
Composer:REZNICEKE
mil von Reznicek was a son of a high-ranking army officer and enjoyed great success as a conductor and composer throughout Europe.Undoubtedly his greatest success was with 'Donna Diana'(1894),to a libretto by the composer himself, inwhich the archetypal plot centres around a haughty Spanish heroine who is surrounded by suitors, whom she regrets. The hero humbles her into loving him.In the brilliant Overture To 'Donna Diana'.one is immediately struck by the grace and elegance of the music which relies largely on the short forms of popular Spanish songs and dance tunes. However, these cannot conceal the fact that Reznicek's music is of Viennese origin and that its charm is the spontaneous charm of Vienna.

Rossini: Il Signor Bruschino - Ouverture

The Thieving Magpie Overture by Rossini
Gioacchino Rossini was a prolific composer and composed nearly 40 operas in the amazingly short period of 21 years and was the most successful composer of his generation-he wrote his last opera 'William Tell ' at the age of 37 and retired to enjoy the good life in Paris where he died at the grand age of 76.'The Thieving Magpie ' was an immediate and enormous success with both the critics and the very discerning Milanese audiences. It is a classic example of 'opera semiseria',but its fusion of comic and dramatic elements is clearly weighted towards the latter-its convoluted plot concerns the servant girl,Ninetta, who is condemned to death for stealing a spoon.but is pardoned when it is found in a magpie's nest.It is now chiefly remembered for its overture, opening with two arresting drumrolls and concluding with one of the most exuberantly self-confident marches ever written.

Schubert - Overture in D Major, D. 12
Schubert - Overture in D major, D. 26
The year 1812 brought two concert overtures, the Overture in D major, D. 12, and the Overture in D major, D. 26, both of which include three trombones. The second work is dated 26th June 1812 and was later revised by the composer. Both suggest ambitions beyond the confines of the Stadtkonvikt orchestra or, indeed, of the amateur resources otherwise available, while reflecting the influence of what he would have heard in the theatre where in 1813 he attended a performance of Gluck's Iphigenie auf Tauris with Milder in the title-rôle and Vogl as Orestes, which moved him to tears and, according to Josef von Spaun, set him studying any score of Gluck that he could find.
Schubert Overture in Bb Major, D.470
Schubert - Overture in D Major, D. 556
Schubert wrote his Overture in D major D. 556 in May 1817. It is scored for woodwind, horns, timpani and strings, but, unusually, without trumpets, the usual companions of drums. It opens with an Allegro maestoso leading to an Andante sostenuto, which returns after the Allegro vivace which provides the substance of the work that has the necessary theatrical quality to serve as the introduction to a play.
Schubert - Ouverture in the Italian Style D 590 - N. Harnoncourt, Royal Concertgebouw Orch.
Schubert - Overture "In the Italian Style" in C Major, D. 591
The Overture in D major in the Italian style, D. 590 was written in November 1817, with its companion Overture in C major in the Italian style, D. 591. The first of the two new overtures starts with an Adagio that leads, after the opening chords, to an Italianate theme. The strings introduce the principal theme of the Allegro giusto, which, in its course, seems to make direct reference to Rossini.Schubert wrote 9 Overtures during his life:
Overture in C major in the Italian style (D. 591)
This second of the overtures in italian style takes on an increasingly Italian air, particularly with the Allegro and its contrasting themes. Schubert arranged both overtures for piano duet, and the Overture in C major for two pianos, eight hands, to be performed in this version in March 1818 in a private concert.

Schubert - Overture in E minor, D. 648
Overture in E minor (D. 648)
Schubert wrote his Overture in E minor, D. 648 in February 1819 and it had its first public performance at the Redoutensaal in November 1821. It disappeared from public view until the publication of Schubert's collected works in 1886. Some Schubertians regard it as a landmark work of unusual power, breaking ground that he would build on in his last two symphonies. The work is scored for the usual woodwind, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani and strings, and marks an important stage in Schubert’s orchestral writing in its dramatic handling of these instrumental forces. The Overture is, in a sense, Schubert doing Beethoven: The short motifs building into longer sequences and the mounting tension and explosive climaxes all show Beethoven's influence on the 22-year-old Schubert. At the same time, the actual construction of those sequences, with the same motif repeated at progressively higher or lower pitches, harks back to Baroque music.

Operetta:THE QUEEN OF SPADES
Composer:SUPPE

Suppe composed much music, including masses, operas, operettas and songs, but it was as a composer of rousing overtures that he achieved his passport to immortality.Besides overtures to his stage works,he was also to compose overtures for special occasions and, especially,to the many plays,c
omedies and farces that were performed in the many theatres where he was the staff conductor. In the late 1850s,Offenbach's operettas were being performed in Vienna, and Suppe subsequently composed a series of one-act operettas to compete with the Frenchman on home ground.'Die Kartenschlagerin'('The Fortune Teller') was originally performed in Vienna in 1862 but was not a success. It was then revised as 'Pique Dame'('The queen of Spades')and premiered in Graz in 1864.The overture is noteworthy for a gentle passage for two flutes, framed by passagesof tremendous rhythmic verse using a popular Hungarian melody, later used by Brahms in his Hungarian Dance No.21.

Suppe:MORNING,NOON and NIGHT in VIENNA Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo Cavaliere Surr-Demelli,more commonly known as Franz von Suppe, was born in Yugoslavia of Belgian parents. His family moved to Vienna when he was in his teens and he was to remain there for the rest of his life, becoming a very successful conductor and composer. Many of his operettas are no longer performed, but a number of the overtures survive in concert programmes.Suppe began his career in 1840 and his first major success came with 'Morning,Noon and Night in Vienna',a scetch of Viennese life, first performed in 1844.In this charming overture,a majestic opening leads to a charming cello solo, followed by contrasting sections that build up to an ebullient finish that depicts the bustle of Vienna at night.

Franz von Suppe_Poet And Peasant Overture
 Opera:POET AND PEASANT
Composer:FRANZ VON SUPPE In 1845 Suppe was appointed conductor atVienna's famous Theater an der Wien, and in August 1846 a play called'Dichter und Bauer'(Poet and Peasant)opened there. For this production Suppe revised an overture that he had already used on two previous occasions. Its form is remarcably similar to that of 'Morning,Noon And Morning In Vienna 'Overture, even down to a haunting cello solo, its gentle, lilting waltz passage and other memorable melodies have helped Poet And Peasant to become one of Suppe's best-known and most popular overtures.

Bedrich Smetana - The Bartered Bride - Overture
Opera:THE BARTERED BRIDE
Composer:SMETANA
''The Bartered Bride ' is so much of a national institution inside Czechoslovakia, and has also been readily accepted by the rest of the world as so typical of the very best type of 'folk opera' that it is surprising to learn that Bedrich Smetana was looked upon during his lifetime as insufficiently nationalist in feeling, and his other operas as too strongly under the influence of Wagner. However,it was 'The Bartered Bride',first produced in 1866,that won him immediate recognition as a musical patriot.Th story is a complicated one of love which turns out all right in the end when the true identity of the handsome stranger in the village is revealed so that he can marry his beloved after all. The overture(written before the rest of the opera,so great was Smetana;s enthusiasm for the subject he was to tackle)is immensely and justifiably popular as a concert piece in its own right. Its themes are later used in connection with the marriage broker Kecal and the marriage contract(in the finale to Act II ).but whatever their associations, the scurrying string passages(perhaps reminiscent of the opera of Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro')give the opera an irresistible start.

Overture: 1812
Composer: TCHAIKOVSKY
The 1812 Overture, one of the most-recorded of Tchaikovsky's works,is a celebratory work commissioned by Nicolai Rubinstein from a somewhat reluctant Tchaikovsky for a festive piece in connection with All-Russia Exhibition of Arts and Crafts. However, the work was finally heard
at the dedication in 1881 of the new cathedral Church of the Redeemer at Moscow, built over many years to celebrate Russia's defeat of the Napoleonic invasion of Moscow in 1812 and the French leader's disastrous winter retreat. The idea was for the overture to be played outside the west door of the cathedral(which was subsequently demolished in the 1917 Revolution)However,in the event, the first performance was at an indoor Moscow concert in 1882 with the'special effects'left out.

(Romeo and Juliet Fantasy-OvertureTchaikovsky's 'Romeo and Juliet-Fantasy Overture' is ajn amazingly faithful telling of the story of Shakespeare'[s famous tragedy of two young lovers separated by their feuding families. He was persuaded to write this work by fellow composer Mily Balakirev, who supplied Tchaik
ovsky with a written scenario.First performed to acclaim in 1870,a few weeks before Tchaikovsky's 30th birthday, the work was subsequently revised twice before arriving in the form in which it is best known'Its basic design is more that of a symphonic poem with an introduction and epilogue rather than an overture. The solemn opening represents the thoughts of Friar Laurence, and the main section is a vivid depiction of the street-fights of the feuding Montagues and Ca[pulets. In contrast there is a hauntingly emotional love there for Romeo and Juliet which reappears with even-increasing intensity before they meet their tragic end.The work finishes with a refrective epilogue, but the final bars could perhaps be the outburst of anger at the folly of the tragedy.

THE WORLD'S FAVOURITE OVERTURESALL TIME FAVOURITES
Prelude to act I of 'La Traviata 'Verdi's 'La Traviata 'caused something of a scandal at its first performance in Venice in 1853.It was based on a contemporary play by Alexandre Dumas,'La Dame aux Camelias',which was a study of 'modern life',centred around a young courtesan called Violetta Valery.Audiences were used to seeing oper as set in the historical past or with a classical or mythological theme, and were shocked to be watching a story set in their own time.It tells the story of her falling in love with a young suitor,Alfredo, who is discouraged from seeing herby his father until the latter learns that Violetta is dying of consumption. However,it is too late and Violetta dies in her returning lover's arms. The Prelude to Act I opens with a delicate theme on the high strings, portrayingVioletta's tragic frailty, which turns intoa restrained and dignified tune which refers to the false reality of her world whilst implying that we will witness the tragedy of a lady of real human depth.
Verdi : La Traviata - Prelude to Act 1

Opera:THE SICILIAN VESPERS
Composer:VERDI
Written in the French Grand Opera tradition(comprising five monumental acts and a ballet in the third),Verdi's 'Sicilian Vespers 'was commissioned for the Great Exhibition in Paris in 1855.As much as Verdi disliked the working conditions in Paris,he was very flattered to be asked to write music for so great an occasion in the artistic capital of the world,as it wasw then. The opera is concerned with the occupation of Sicily by French troopsduring the 13th century, and the efforts of the Sicilians to dislodge them.In the event,Verdi disliked the libretto because he thought it offensive to both the French(because of the massacre of the French at the end of the opera) and the Italians(because of the treacherous behaviour of the Sicilian patriots). He also fell out with his librettist,Scribe, and their arguments were even the subject of comment in the newspapers. The overture is one of Verdi's best, and is dominated by the long cello tune, taken from the duet in Act III between Arrigo(the hero)andMonforte(the villain).

THE WORLD'S FAVOURITE OVERTURES No10
MAJESTY and GRANDEUR
OVERTURE to the MASTERSINGERS
Composer:RICHARD WAGNER
The subject of Richard Wagner's 'The Mastersingers of Nuremberg'(completed in 1867) is the contrast between the ideals and innovations og high art and the narrow-minded conservatism which so often gets in the way of those ideals. The background of the dramatic and evocative plot is historical Nuremberg in the mid-16th century, with its flourishing middle class, love of art and delight in song, and revealed in the poetic and musical life of the Mastersingers and of their foremost representative, the cobbler Hans Sachs who was a follower of Martin Luther. The love element in the opera is embodied in the mutual attraction of the young knight Walther for the young Eva,whom he eventually wins in the singing competition.
The Overture To'The Masresingers' is made up of contrastinf themes from the opera(Wagner devised the idea of using recurring themes,or leitmotifs, that depict characters, emotions or situations)-representing the Mastersingers,Eva,Walther,love,etc.-and culminates in an amazing passage when all the themes are played at the same time throughout the orchestra and are shown to fit perfectly together.
